Mary Queen of Scots marries Henry Stuart, Lord Darnley, in Edinburgh. He is her second husband: she was betrothed from the age of five to the dauphin of France, but they had scarcely been married two years before he died, aged only sixteen. Both Mary and Henry have claims to the English throne, so to English eyes this marriage appears threatening.
