On the death of Holy Roman Emperor Ferdinand I, his son Maximilian II succeeds as Emperor, as well as becoming King in Austria, Bohemia and Hungary. The remainder of the Habsburg dominions, in Inner Austria, pass to Ferdinand's third son, the Archduke Charles.
