On the death of Gustavus I, Eric XIV succeeds as King of Sweden. His rule was dominated by conflict with Denmark in the Scandinavian Seven Years' War from 1563, and his actions become increasingly violent until, in 1568, he was deposed by an alliance of nobles, and his half-brother John III took power.
