Alarmed at the threat apparently posed by the Huguenot Protestants in France, Francis II appoints Michel de L'Hopital, Constable of France, as chief minister. One of his first acts in this new role is to promise liberty of worship, by protecting 'heretics' from the investigations of the Inquisition.
