Francis II succeeds to the throne of France on the death of his father Henry II in a tournament. Francis is only 15 years old, so his mother Catherine de' Medici is appointed Regent, but in reality, Francois, Duke of Guise, and his brother, the Cardinal of Lorraine, seize power. Francis' wife, Mary Queen of Scots, throws out a challenge to Elizabeth I by taking the title Queen of England.
