John Knox, who had been in exile in first Geneva and then Frankfurt, returns to Scotland. On 10th May he preaches an incendiary sermon at Perth, which incites the Protestant Lords of the Congregation to rebellion. They seize Edinburgh and destroy religious houses at Stirling, Scone and St. Andrews, and subsequently approach Elizabeth I for aid against the regency of Mary of Guise.
