At a battle at St. Quentin in Picardy, the French army under Gaspard de Coligny is defeated by a joint Spanish and English force under Philibert Emmanuel of Savoy. At signs of panic in the capital, the Duke of Guise is summoned home from Italy to attend to the defence of this north-east frontier.
