Lorenzo Campeggio, the papal legate, at the Diet of Nuremberg orders the Edict of Worms (of May 1521) to be carried out as far as possible. The' Lutheran' Party, led by the Elector Frederick the Wise of Saxony, and Philip, Landgrave of Hesse, the pupil of Philip Melanchthon, demand that a national synod should meet to discuss church reform at Speyer in Nov.
