Queen Mary I of England signs a marriage treaty with Philip II of Spain, against the advice of many of her courtiers, who would have preferred her to make a match with an English nobleman such as the Earl of Courtenay. Since Mary was, apart from the controversial and unsuccessful twelfth-century Matilda, the first Queen regnant, there was unsurprisingly anxiety in England at the prospect of a foreign King of England.
