In the wake of Edward VI's death on 6th July, the succession is disputed: the expected next monarch would be his elder sister Mary Tudor, but the king's Will had named Lady Jane Grey to follow him. The Duke of Northumberland, Lady Jane's father-in-law and Edward's first minister, sets out from London for East Anglia, where Mary Tudor's supporters are gathering.
