The Duke of Somerset, Lord Protector of King Edward VI, is forced to resign his power. The outbreak that summer of rebellion in both Norfolk and the West Country suggested to many that he was guilty of mismanagement. The Privy Council united against him and, led by John Dudley, Earl of Warwick, effectively enacted a coup d'etat against this head of government, arresting Somerset and overthrowing his rule.
