After the assassinationof Cardinal David Beaton at the castle of St Andrews the previous year, his Protestant enemies took over the castle and formed the first Scottish Protestant congregation there. It was first besieged by the Regent, the Earl of Arran, and in August, a French fleet arrived and managed to capture it from the Protestants.
