The progress of the conflict between Scotland and England takes an unexpected turn. The English had previously been in the ascendant, as an English force under Sir Ralph Evers had succecssfully raided the Border country as far as Melrose. Now, however, the Scots, led by the Earls of Angus and Arran, gain an important victory defeat at the Battle of Ancrum Moor.
