In the wake of the death of James V of Scotland, leaving his six-day-old daughter Mary as queen, rival claimants battle for the regency. Cardinal Beaton's claim is overthrown when Scottish lords deem his copy of the late King's will to be forged. Instead, they appoint James Hamilton, Earl of Arran, as Regent. He is heir presumptive to the throne and leader of the pro-English party, which is anxious for peace.
