A treaty signed at Hampton Court arranges for Henry VIII to marry Anne of Cleves, the elder sister of William Duke of Cleves. This marriage forms part of Thomas Cromwell's plan for an alliance between England and the Protestant princes of Germany, in an attempt to counteract the combined power of Emperor Charles V and his new ally Francis I of France.
