Charles II tried to use his power to lift the various restrictions on religious dissenters, Catholic and Protestant, who did not subscribe to the Church of England. (See the Uniformity Act, the Conventicles Act, the Five Mile Act, the Corporation Act.). His attempt was met with concerted hostility by parliament and he withdrew the proposal.
