In Florence, the Duke, Alessandro de' Medici, is assassinated by his distant cousin Lorenzino, who entrapped Alessandro by promising him an encounter with Lorenzino's sister, a beautiful widow. He is succeeded by his distant relative Cosimo de' Medici.
