Elector Joachim II of Brandenburg acceded to the electorate on the death of his father, Joachim I. To receive his inheritance, his father made him promise to remain a Roman Catholic. However, his youngest brother, John of Brandenburg-Neumark, becomes a Protestant, and Joachim II himself also gradually converted to the Lutheran faith, not making his allegiance explicit until 1555, for fear of provoking confrontation with Emperor Charles V.
