Pope Clement VII dies. Alessandro Farnese is elected his successor as Pope Paul III. He will hold the post until his death in 1550, and takes on a consciously reformist agenda, appointing a number of reforming cardinals, convening the Council of Trent and presiding over the establishment of new orders such as the Jesuits.
