Ivan IV (who will come to be known as Ivan the Terrible) succeeds to the throne, aged three, on the death of his father Basil (Vasili) III. His mother, Helen Glinski, becomes Regent, but this arrangement only lasts until 1538, when she dies of what many believe to have been assassination by poison. Ivan assumed full power in 1544, at the age of 14.
