Queen Anne Boleyn gives birth to Princess Elizabeth. This is a serious disappointment for her husband Henry VIII, because his arduous and lengthy campaign to obtain a divorce from his first wife, Catherine of Aragon, was partly driven by her failure to produce a male heir, which he hoped to gain from Anne Boleyn. However, Henry reputedly expressed satisfaction at Elizabeth's birth, assuming that sons would shortly follow.
