Pope Clement VII founds a Portuguese Inquisition in Lisbon, by the bull Cum ad nihil. Although established by the papacy, it came under the authority of the King of Portugal, and its Grand Inquisitor, although named by the Pope, was always selected from the royal family. Its main target was not Protestantism but Sephardic Jews suspected of insufficient conversion to Christianity.
