Charles V appoints his sister, Mary of Hungary, Regent of the Netherlands, after the death of his aunt and previous Governor Margaret of Savoy. Mary is to hold this post until resigning it to her nephew Philip II of Spain in 1555. One of the first acts of her regency is to issue a decree establishing councils for justice, finance and foreign affairs.
