Henry VIII advances his break with Rome and purges the memory of Cardinal Wolsey by an extraordinary show-trial. In the Court of King's Bench, he brings legal proceedings against the entire clergy of England, on the grounds that they all violated the statutes of provisors and praemunire in recognising Wolsey's legatine authority.
