Alessandro de' Medici is appointed Governor of Florence, the last of the 'Senior' branch of the Medici family to rule the city-state. He gained power only with the aid of imperial troops, who had to besiege the city for ten months to force the republican government, which had been established in 1527, to submit. He was recognised as the son of Lorenzo II de' Medici, but many modern historians believe him to have been an illegitimate son of Guilio de' Medici, by now Pope Clement VII. In 1532 he was made Duke of Florence, a title granted him by Emperor Charles V.
