Florence had undergone a revolution in May 1527, in which it had expelled its Medici rulers, nephews of the Pope Clement VII, and re-established a republican government. However, in the treaty that concluded the War of the League of Cognac in June, Charles V pledged to restore and uphold the Medici rule in the city. The family encountered popular opposition to their restoration, and it was only in August 1530, after a siege of ten months, that Florence was restored to the Medici.
