The Diet of Augsburg meets, attended by Holy Roman Emperor Charles V, who is determined to extirpate heresy in his dominions. Martin Luther's protege Philip Melanchthon states the case for the refomer, since Luther himself is under the ban of the Empire and therefore unable to attend.
