In the treaty that concluded the War of the League of Cognac in June, Charles V pledged to restore and uphold the rule of the Medici in Florence. However, the family now encounter popular opposition to their restoration, which has established itself as a republic, and an imperial army is forced to lay siege to the city until August 1530 to achieve success.
