The minority of the delegates at the Diet of Speyer who voted against the decision to enforce the Edict of Worms now lodge a protest against the decision of the Catholic majority. This Lutheran group is led by the Elector John of Saxony, the Margrave George of Brandenburg and Philip, Landgrave of Hesse, and also includes the princes of Brunswick-Luneburg and Anhalt, Nuremberg, Strasbourg and 12 other cities. This act gives rise to the term 'Protestant'.
