Faced with the Sack of Rome and as a prisoner of the imperial troops, Pope Clement VII is forced to sign a treaty with Charles V. This grants the Emperor ecclesiastical privileges and provides him with considerable sums of money. By its terms, the Pope also promises to call a general council of the Church.
