Ferdinand of Bohemia and Austria, rival claimant to the Hungarian throne, defeats King John Zápolya of Hungary in a battle at Tokay, and uses this victory to take over most of Hungary. In response, Zápolya appeals to the Ottoman Turks for assistance.
