At the First Diet of Speyer, every member of the Empire is instructed in how they should respond to the Edict of Worms, being told that their conduct in relation to this injunction must be able to answer to God and his Imperial Majesty. However, the subsequent disagreement between Charles V and the Pope prevents him from enforcing the Edict.
