A son and Dauphin is born to King Francis I of France and Queen Claude, also named Francis and known as Francis III, Duke of Brittany. After the Battle of Pavia in 1525, when Charles V demanded hostages from Francis I to bind him to abide by the Treaty of Madrid (1526), the prince was to spend three years as a captive in Madrid, an experience which permanently marked him and probably led to his early death.
