Archduke Charles, grandson of Ferdinand of Aragon, arrives in Spain from the Netherlands to claim his inheritance after the death of his grandfather. Although Ferdinand's direct heir was his daughter Juana, the Emperor Maximilian and Pope Leo X, as well as the Castilian regent Cardinal Ximenes de Cisneros, all preferred Charles, so he came to an arrangement with the Cortes to rule jointly with his mother.
