The Duke of Albany, a nephew of James III, lands in Scotland with orders from Francis I to exploit divisions at the Scottish court. Pro-French, he represents a rival focus of political attention to that of the current Regent Margaret Tudor. She is James IV's widow and mother of the young king James V, who, as sister of Henry VIII of England, is attempting to pursue a more conciliatory policy with Scotland's closest neighbour.
