Upon the death of Louis XII of France, his nephew Francis, Duke of Angouleme succeeds as King Francis I. He was to rule until his death in 1547, becoming an important patron of the arts and architecture, as well as scandalising the Western world by his diplomatic alliance with the Ottoman Empire.
