Ferdinand I of Aragon and Louis XII of France meet at Savonna in northern Italy, and agree to sell Pisa to Florence, a transaction that is carried out in 1509. Having been under the control of Florence almost throughout the fifteenth century, the city-state had seized its chance to reclaim independence amid the chaos of the French invasion of Italy in 1496. However, with this takeover by Florence, its absorption into the now more powerful state was to be permanent.
