[Preliminary entry.]As part of his campaign that brought all of Gaul west of the Rhine into the Roman Empire (58-54 BCE), Caesar invaded Britain in 55 BCE, and then again in 54 BCE, conquering the south-eastern tribes, earning the plaudits of the Senate, but leaving no permanent garrison.
