Seizing its opportunity as Charles VIII of France invaded the Italian states to claim Naples, Pisa revolted against Florence, which had ruled it since 1406. It managed to regain its independence as the Second Pisan Republic, but was reconquered in 1509 after a series of battles and sieges.
