Under the leadership of Dominican Tomas de Torquemada, the Spanish Inquisition decided that Jews posed too great a risk to Christians to be tolerated. As a result, Jews in Spain were given three months in which to convert to Christianity or to leave. Probably around half of the Jewish population chose conversion, while many of the others fled to North Africa.
