In 1917 the British Prime Minister, Arthur James Balfour, declared in a letter to Lord Rothschild, leader of British jewry, that Britain would support the foundation of a Jewish national home in Palestine. In 1914-18, Britain had encouraged Arab resistance to Turkish domination (because Turkey was allied with Germany) and with the collapse of the Ottoman Empire in 1918 found itself the dominant western power in the Middle East. In 1922 British authority over Palestine was formally recognised by a League of Nations. mandate which incorporated the Balfour principles, and thus encouraged Jewish emigration. However, the increase of the Jewish population was not welcomed by the Palestinian Arabs, especially in the 1930s as European Jews …
