Part of the Third Battle of Ypres, a significant battle in the
First World War. Haig had already launched many futile attacks, but
when his troops finally advanced to occupy Passchendaele (five
miles from their starting point), Haig felt this to be sufficient.
He had predicted an easy success, but in fact lost 325,000 men.
