Roald Engelbregt Gravning Amundsen (1872–1928) was a Norwegian explorer of the polar regions who was the first person to reach both the North and South Poles. He led the first Antarctic expedition to reach the South Pole between 1910 and 1912. The expedition was a success, the party of 5 mean arriving at the pole on December 14, 1911, thus beating Robert F. Scott and his team by thirty-five days. The journey (with careful preparation and high-quality sled dogs) took 99 days and a distance of about 3,000 kilometres.
