Congress authorises Theodore Roosevelt to buy rights of the
French Panama Company and to acquire from Colombia perpetual
control of the canal zone. The United States' desire to construct a
trans-isthmus canal had a serious impact on the relationship
between the U.S. and the European powers, who felt that the canal
would reinforce the United States' domination of the Caribbean.
