By 1901, Queen Victoria had been on the throne for over six decades, and had been a widow for four of them. She was also over eighty years old, and most of her children were at least middle aged. However, he returned to England to be at her deathbed in January 1901, along with Victoria's eldest son and heir, Edward VII.
