By 1901, Queen Victoria had been on the throne for over six decades, and had been a widow for four of them. She was also over eighty years old, and most of her children were at least middle aged. Her eldest grandchild, Wilhelm, was now Emperor of Germany, although he gad not established the liberal monarchy that Victoria had hoped he would, instead implementing something closer to an autocracy. However, he returned to England to be at her deathbed in January 1901, along with Victoria's eldest son and heir, Edward VII.
