The University of Cambridge came about after a group of scholars from Oxford, who had met with hostility from residents in the city, travelled to the town of Cambridge to settle there instead. By 1226 their numbers had grown, so they were able to establish a system of courses of study, and appointed one of them a "Chancellor". The first college was established by the Bishop of Ely in 1284, as St Peter's or Peterhouse, followed by King's Hall in 1317.
