Already in Studies on Hysteria (1895) Freud had noticed that during psychoanalytic sessions his clients were transferring to him characteristics and feelings which belonged to their parental and other significant figures. Initially, and notably in the case history of “Dora” (1900), he did not fully understand the processes involved, their value and their dangers, and saw transference as one of the impediments to the analytic process, but he clarified his understanding in “The Dynamics of Transference” (1912).

Freud theorised transference as an actualisation of positive and negative unconscious desires which were associated with infantile prototypes and saw this actualisation as an attempt to resist …
