On 19 September, Nathaniel Bacon led a group of disaffected planters against what they perceived was the autocratic British Governor, Sir William Berkeley. The rebels burned Jamestown, Virginia. However, when Bacon was killed during the uprising, the rebellion collapsed. Twenty-three of Bacon's followers were subsequently executed.
