The arrival of the Australians was trumpeted as a triumphant
moment for the British Empire, but by December 1915, 7,594 were
dead and 19,500 were wounded. The sufferings of Australian troops,
and the apparent disregard of the British High Command for the loss
of soldiers' lives, were to have long repercussions in Australian
political history.
