East India Company and British forces under Robert Clive end the aspirations of Nawab of Bengal, Siraj-ud-Daula. The battle was also a serious setback for the French who supported the Nawab’s campaign. The new Nawab, Mir Jafar, is installed as a puppet of the East India Company which in effect establishes British imperial authority over the richest region in India, without any mandate from the British government to do so.
